It's
on very good grounds the NUK teat's not round...
The NUK shape is based on studies carried out by
Dr. A. Mˆ¢ller (Dentistry) and Prof. W. Balters.
Using nature's example NUK teats and soothers are
designed to simulate as closely as possible the
shape of the breastfeeding nipple and likewise make
baby work hard. If the feed and drink could be sucked
through the teats with ease, this could eventually
have such consequences as jaw and teeth malformations. |
Essential functions of a
teat
|
|
As with the natural method of breastfeeding the
flattened sucking part of the teat promotes the
widening of the lower jaw, as the tongue is pressed
on both sides.
The pronounced rounded upper side itself fits almost
perfectly to the shape of the palate. The top of
the lip is kept completely flat to enable the lips
to close as they do when sucking at the breast.
The advantages are twofold. Firstly, sucking trains
the movement of the lower jaw. Secondly, the swallowing
of air is minimised, thus helping to prevent the
infant from suffering unpleasant tummy ache.
The hole in the teat is deliberately placed way
back and not at the tip. This keeps the food in
the mouth longer, enabling it to be softened with
saliva - an essential requirement for healthy digestion. |
